Brazilian Day in Los Angeles 2011

A great time was had by all at the historic Asphaltum Springs on the Rancho La Brea on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles this past weekend.

Within footsteps of LACMA and the Page Museum, the many Brazilians in Los Angeles had a party in Hancock Park.

I hung out with my friend Sergio Mielniczenko, who hosts the Global Village Show on KPFK on Fridays (listen to last Fridays show for a new Meninos do Morumbi track I remixed for Music is Hope Foundation), and  the Brazilian Hour on PRSS on weekends.

Here are some photos of the day, including one of me with Carnaval Muse, Sonaria.

The stage, early on.

Great Brazilian food!

John Jones, Dr Gerhard Lengeling, and musician Sujin Nam, with some of Apogee's Tech Awards

With overwhelming joy, I finally got to meet Dr Gerhard Lengeling and Sujin Nam at the the Apogee 25th party in August.

Back in 1989, I was simply empowered, when I first started using Gerhard’s Notator/Creator music software on the Atari ST.

I still have my 1040 ST and Notator and Uniter, all ready to go at a moments notice. You will never ever have a better piece of music software under the Sun than Notator!

Where would I be today with out it?

Thanks Gerhard!

Nothing Plane About it

This week started with a bang!

We were over at Steve Postell’s cutting electric guitars for Jimmy McKeever’s new album, when we heard a rash of sirens blasting by Steve’s house in peaceful Santa Monica. I stepped out of the studio to catch one of them flying past, and it had HAZMAT written all over it. We knew it had to be a plane that went down, so off we three went for a look see.

A small plane had crashed into a house just a block from Steve’s, and less than that from Penmar Golf Course. The pilot and the gardners appeared to be okay. The rookie flyer was practicing touch and go landings when he clipped a tree and hit the house about a block from the end of the runway. I hope he goes back there and thanks that tree for breaking his fall!

Why is Clover Field airport still there?

As if the last 20 years flew by, the dynamic trio reformed for a brief moment at Sphere Studios in Battersea, London this past July.

Just think of all the water under the bridge since 1990 when we finished the Duran Duran album Liberty (now old enough to drink)!

Click the Liberty link and see the band lip sync to the title track. It’s awesome to see Sterling Campbell on drums!

Funk Remix from Meninos do Morumbi

Funk Remix 2011

The second release for Meninos do Morumbi of Sao Paulo is my remix of their song Funk.

Aside from Flavio Pimenta and the students on drums and vocals, I’ve added Steve Ferrone on drum kit with yours truly on bass and keys.

This is the second official release from Music is Hope Foundation, with all proceeds going to fund Meninos do Morumbi in Sao Paulo. Since the school was started over 10 years ago Flavio has brought over 13,000 children, many of them from the Morumbi Favela, through the program.

Please support MIHF and Meninos by purchasing the single and the re-released album through iTunes or from CDbaby.

The first CD from the Music is Hope Foundation is the re-release of the 2006 Meninos Do Morumbi self titled album.

Proceeds from the sale of the CD go to help support the Meninos Do Morumbi school in Sao Paulo.

Over the past 13 years Flavio Pimenta and his Meninos Do Morumbi have educated and fed over 13,000 children, mostly from the Paraisopolis favela in Morumbi, Sao Paulo.

Fleetwood and Jones at NAMM 2000

I recently dug my HHB CDR 850 out of storage and started using it again in my studio.

It’s a stand alone CD recorder and burner that still works perfectly after all these years. It has a really clean sound that I still like a lot.

HHB also made the awesome Circle 5 speaker’s that I have never stopped using in my studio. I think Mick Fleetwood still has his pair in Hawaii.
